Painting Framing
What ever is mounted or framed must be treated in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the Fine Art Guild. The basic concept is that anything mounted or framed must be capable of being removed from the display with no evidence that it has been displayed. This means that there must be no marks, blemishes, glue residue left on the object. This applies to painting framing as well.
Framing a painting is generally a straightforward process. First of all measure the painting, choose the moulding and cut to size. Then assemble and attach the holding clips and rings to allow you to hang the painting on a wall.
A framed painting can be enhanced further by mounting the painting behind glass. In addition, a high quality mount board perimeter could be used to line the outside edge of the painting to enhance the presentation. The outside mount can be a complimentary or contrasting colour to the painting to make it stand out more.

Painting Frame Types
Standard Stretched Canvas
A standard stretched frame is usually 15 – 20 mm thick, and can be stapled on the back, or on the edges. If stapled on the back then the artwork can look weak and unfinished, a frame will finish it. Also, if a canvas is stapled on the edges a frame will be required to hide the staples.
Gallery Wrapped Canvas
You don’t have to frame every work of art. If you have a gallery-wrapped canvas then the canvas goes around the edges, and is stapled on the back. This also gives a very neat and smooth finish to the edges of the canvas and allows the edges to be painted in some way. The painting can be carried around the edges to give a slightly 3D effect, or painted in some neutral colour.
There are frames available specifically for gallery wrapped canvases, and you can build up a multi-layer frame if you wish.
